His earlier education was obtained at the common schools of Clay township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and his final studies were pursued at the Lititz Academy. For a number of years he assisted his father in the store at West Lincoln, and about 1857 he succeeded to the business. He remained in active and successful trade at West Lincoln until his demise. He confined himself closely to his business, and was never an aspirant after public position. For several years he was associated with Benjamin Wissler in the manufacture and sale of millstones, under the firm-name of Weidman & Wissler.
