She was born on the farm in Cross Creek township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, which was later occupied by William Perry, and began teaching school in her early girlhood. She taught several years, and achieved an enviable reputation in her chosen calling, but retired from the profession on the death of her mother in 1867, and kept house for her father.
