He emigrated from Ireland to America in the summer of 1795 , and settled in Morris township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on the middle fork of Ten-Mile creek.

He was born of an old and respectable Scotch-Irish Presbyterian family. Both her parents were members of the Presbyterian Church, in the parish of Bellee, County Down, Ireland, and was herself a member of the Presbyterian Church for some years before her death.
