General Notes: Husband - James Wendell Vernam

He lived for sixteen years on the old family homestead, obtaining his education in the local public schools, and in the meantime helping his father with the farm work. At the age of sixteen years, however, he left the parental roof and went to Washington, Pennsylvania, where he learned the machinist's trade, following this occupation until twenty years of age. In 1903 he entered Bucknell University. He only remained a single year, however, and then transferred his efforts to the world of business once more. He entered the employ of the Westinghouse Company in East Pittsburgh and remained there for two years, gaining a very practical knowledge of industrial methods and business conditions generally. He worked for the Westinghouse Company thereafter, occasionally, but in the year 1910 established his own business at New Kensington and did one of the largest trades in his line in the region.
