He was well educated in the schools of McClellan Corners, Conneaut Valley, Pennsylvania, and began active life in the lumber business, in which he continued until the oil business attracted him, when he located at Mecca, Ohio. He continued in oil production for many years. He was a Republican in politics, and was actively interested in political affairs, holding many town offices.
