He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and came with his parents to Butler County when he was about fifteen years of age. He grew to manhood on his father's farm, which he inherited on the death of the latter, and throughout his life he was one of the well-known farmers of Connoquenessing township. He died on the old homestead at the remarkable age of ninety-three years. He was married three times and had children by each marriage. His last wife was Eliza Mallison.
