After completing his schooling in Butler, Pennsylvania, he learned the machinist trade and lived at Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, for some time. He later took up mechanical engineering work and beginning in 1918 was a resident of Zelienople, where he was identified with the Herman Pneumatic Machine Company.
He was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and both he and his wife were members of the First Baptist Church of McKeesport.
