He was born of German ancestry, in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, where his boyhood and early youth were passed. In 1828 he and his brother Christian walked from Harpers Ferry to Brownsville, Pennsylvania, and there he worked at his trade, that of blacksmith. He was married there and they settled in Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. In 1869 he purchased a farm in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, moved thereon, and there died.
