He attended grade and high schools in Sandy Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and early started a career in the lumber industry. They operated the firm of G. W. Pifer Sons, and became widely known for their work as dealers in lumber and builders' supplies in Du Bois and its environs.
John G. Pifer was also a director of the Citizens' Building & Loan Association, a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Sandy Township Board of Authority. He was also a director of the Young Men's Christian Association. He was a members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and belonged to the Presbyterian Church, in which he was a trustee.
