He was the youngest of his siblings, and was reared in Greene and Fayette counties, Pennsylvania. Early in life he learned the miller's trade with his father, and followed it for forty years. He erected and operated a grist-mill for nearly twenty-eight years. He was a successful farmer and was the owner 320 acres of valuable land in Cumberland Township, Greene County.
In politics he was ever a strong Democrat. He and his wife were prominent members of the M. E. Church.
