Cecil McDonald, Aged 43 Years, Passes Away in Oil City Hospital Sunday Evening Few Hours After Figuring in Plane Accident
COMPANION INJURED
Cecil McDonald, 43, of Turtle Creek, was fatally injured and his companion, Benjamin Peer, 24, was badly injured early yesterday afternoon when the Taylor Cub small plane in which they were "taking-off" for a return trip from the vicinity of Tionesta, crashed in a field. McDonald died in the Oil City hospital at 7:50 o'clock last night. He suffered a broken jaw, fractured skull and internal injuries.
Peer suffered cuts and bruises and his condition was not considered serious.
McDonald, who operated a flying field at Turtle Creek, spent the past week at the home of his sister, Mrs. Hamilton Wilson in Tionesta, and Peer, one of his students, flew from Pitcairn early yesterday to take McDonald home.
Peer flew a Taylor Cub machine, a small plane, and during the forenoon a number of passengers were taken for short flights. Early in the afternoon the two men arranged to fly to Turtle Creek. They were on a field of the farm owned by Ray Saxton on the hill above Tionesta.
Just what happened had not been determined last night, but it is said that the plane circled around when about 200 feet in the air and crashed in a field on the W. W. Caril farm.
The injured men were taken to the office of Dr. F. J. Bovard in Tionesta, and he advised they be taken to the Oil City hospital.
When questioned in regard to the probable cause of the accident, Peer said he did not know what went wrong.
"The first I knew of any trouble", said Peer, "was when I heard McDonald shout, 'Hang on, we're going to crash.'"
Further investigation of the accident is being made.
McDonald was born and reared in Endeavor. He later moved to Oil City and during his residence of about three years here was employed as a mechanic for the Weaver Garage Co.
In addition to his widow and three sons, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Alice Noel, of Seneca, and the following brothers and sisters: Angus McDonald, Turtle Creek; Arthur McDonald and Nelson McDonald, Bradford; Mrs. Blanche Berlin, Erie, and Mrs. Russell Michael, Pittsburgh.
The body was removed to Turtle Creek early this morning. Services will probably be held at his home Wednesday afternoon.
