He learned the trade of a tanner while in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, and after his return to Crawford County worked at his trade in different places until 1854, when he purchased the tannery in Woodcock, in which he did a profitable business. It was one of the oldest tanneries in Crawford County, being the second one built, and the oldest in existence in the county at the time.
He and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. He held all the public offices in Woodcock Borough, with the exception of School Director, and served multiple terms as Justice of the Peace. In politics he was a Republican.
