He was educated at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, New York, from which he graduated in 1871. He was at first connected with the Indiana North and South Railroad as an assistant engineer to the chief engineer, W. H. Searls. After nine months labor he was associated with the Bennett's Branch, or Low Grade Railroad as assistant engineer to the principal assistant engineer of the western division. On the 13th of December, 1872, he came to Blairsville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, as assistant engineer to the superintendent of the W. P. R. R. At one time he had entire charge of the engineering department of the West Penn Railroad.
