He went to Dubuque, Iowa, in 1856, and engaged in fur dealing. He married the widow of his former partner and shortly after his marriage he removed to Epworth, where he resided until the death of his wife in 1883. They had no children. He was later in business in Dubuque, but lived in Epworth, which was about ten miles away.
