He was a native of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, but his entire life was spent in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

He was born in the eastern part of Pennsylvania, of German parents, and, upon arriving at maturity he married, his wife born in Germany, and after marriage they settled on a farm in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on which they died at a ripe old age.
