General Notes: Husband - Samuel Wilson
He came to America about 1783, from Ardstraw, county Tyrone, Ireland. The voyage across the At-lantic to Philadelphia consumed three months, during which a daughter Mary died of small-pox and was buried at sea. In 1801, he, with his wife and five sons, moved from their first settlement in Centre County to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, but returned the following winter to Centre County, where he died, and was buried at Center Hall. His widow and the family returned to Clarion County in the spring of 1802.
The family first built a little pole house by a spring run, later built a log house, which in turn gave way to a more modern farm house. This farm was first held in the Wilson family by deed to Robert Wilson dated January 31, 1814, recorded in Armstrong county, deed book vol. I, page 102. The farm held in the Wilson family was originally of 135 acres and was patented from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, July 8, 1706, as "Lands Down," and is enrolled in patent book No. 57, page 439. The whole tract of land containing 984 acres, 142 perches, was surveyed in pursuance of warrant No. 54, dated May 17, 1785, to Timothy Pickering and others, by deed dated March 3, 1795, who by deed dated March 3, 1795, conveyed the same to Andrew Gregg and James Poe, two of the executors of the last will of General James Potter; they by deed March, 1807, conveyed the same to James Potter and wife, who by deed dated January 31, 1814, conveyed the same to Robert Wilson.
The original Wilsons were all Presbyterians, and the following is a copy of the original church letter brought to the United States by Samuel Wilson, Sr.:
That Saml. Willson together with his wife Jean Willson alias Love is of a reputable protestant De-senting family, & hath always Beheavd Becoming the Christian Charr, & is now Designd to visit some of the United & Independant States of North America & that they are every way worthy to be admitted to Church priviledges in any Christian Society where it shall please God & his kind providence to appoint their lot, is Certifyd at Ardstrau in the County Tyrone this 7th Day of May 1798 one.
