He was educated in the public schools of his native town, and afterward attended Eastman's Business College, of Poughkeepsie, New York, for one year. In the spring of 1877 he and L. D. Leech purchased interests in the queensware store of D. D. Lynn & Co., and with John R. Artherholt estab-lished the firm of Artherholt & Co. He was a member of the I. O. O. F., and in politics a Republican. He served as second burgess of Greenville.
