General Notes: Husband - Rev. Martin Loucks
He was brought up on the homestead farm, and was educated in the common schools of East Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and became a farmer, and continued as such during his life. He was reared under the religious instructions of the Mennonite Church, and some time after his marriage, at about the age of thirty years, he was chosen, according to the customs and rites of his church, a preacher, and fulfilled the duties of his office, which was an unsalaried one, during his life. His duties took him frequently into various parts of his own county and adjoining counties. He was greatly beloved by his people. Though forbidden by the laws of his church to hold political office, he took interest in politics as a Whig and afterwards as an earnest Republican.
He and his wife were the parents of eight children, five sons and three daughters.
When a babe he was brought to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with his parents, and there spent his entire life. He was reared on the homestead, which consisted of one hundred and sixty acres, and later became the owner thereof, to which he subsequently added another farm adjoining, which consisted of one hundred and seventy acres, and these two farms which were located in what is now the borough of Scottdale were built upon, but not during the lifetime of Martin Loucks. He was a successful farmer, and also a devout member of the Mennonite church, in which he was a minister for many years, being ordained in 1833 and preaching up to the time of his death. His labors were confined to the churches at what is now Alverton and Pennsville.
