General Notes: Husband - Henry Stokey
He was born in Alsace, France, and immigrated to the United States in 1847, and settled in New Orleans. He remained there for two years, and returned to his native country in 1849 for the purpose of settling up his business with a view of making America his home. He returned to the United States in 1851, and again located at New Orleans, pursuing his trade, that of blacksmith and machinist, until 1852, when he located at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1856 he removed to Evans City, Butler County, and engaged in farming in Adams township, and also owned a farm in Jackson township. In 1864 Mr. Stokey became proprietor of a hotel in Evans City, which he conducted until 1868, when he resumed farming in Jackson township. In 1878 he purchased the Eagle Hotel, at Zelienople, which he carried on until his death. He was a member of the German Reformed church. Mr. Stokey was a Democrat, in politics, and served in the Zelienople council. He was a member of Connoquenessing Lodge, I. O. O. F., of Butler, which he joined in 1866, and was also a charter member of Harmony Lodge, I. O. O. F. [HBC 1895, 1089]
He was born in Alsace, France, where he grew to maturity and during the early eighteen-fifties, when the government was changed from a republic to a monarchy he became dissatisfied and emigrated to the United States. He had prior to this made three trips to America, and first located in Philadelphia for a short time, after which he removed to Pittsburgh. He continued his residence in this city for two years, at the end of which time he located on a farm in Jackson Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. In 1864 he became proprietor of a hotel, which he conducted successfully until 1869, when he located on a farm, which later became a part of the site of Evans City. In 1878, he purchased the Old Eagle Hotel at Zelienople, conducting same until the time of his death. [TCHBC, 620]
