He was raised on a farm. At the age of seven­teen years he enlisted in the 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artilery for one year. In 1876 he purchased one-half interest in the Shaffer gristmill, which he owned with Linus Shaffer; they did a custom and merchant milling business.
