He attended Lehigh Uni­versity two years, spent three years at Jefferson Medical College, and was grad­uated from the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia. He became a practicing physician at Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.

He served in the U. S. Army during the World War as a lieutenant commander on coast guard duty at Norfolk, Virginia.
