General Notes: Husband - Col. David Kilgore

He was born February 2, 1745. [ONW, 1212]

He removed to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, before the Revolutionary War and in 1776 was commissioned captain of a company in the Eighth Regiment Pennsylvania Line. He sold a valuable mill property for money with which to clothe his company and never asked or received any compensation from the government. He served throughout the war, retiring at its close as colonel of his company. He returned home, and was a justice of the peace for many years. He owned three large farms in Westmoreland and several more in Indiana County. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
He and his wife had seven sons and three daughters.

He was a native of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He later emigrated to Westmoreland County, where he was the head of the Kilgore family in that section for many years. He was one of our early patriots who assisted in the establishment of American independence, and as captain in the Eighth Continental Line Regiment under Colonel Broadhead, the Eighth Regiment of General Anthony Wayne's division, saw much active service. This regiment was composed of eight companies from Westmoreland County and one from Bedford County and was one of the first in the field, although it had to come from the banks of the Monongahela and the western frontier. As captain of one of these companies, Captain Kilgore participated in the battle of Paoli, battle of Bound Brook, battle of Brandywine, etc., in which his regiment lost heavily in officers and men. At different times during the progress of the war he, personally, at his own expense, supplied the men of his command with clothing and other necessaries. He was considered not only a brave soldier, but a most disinterested patriot by the people of the West at that time. Captain David Kilgore was the father of seven sons, the greater number of whom emigrated to the West.
