In 1843 he and his wife moved to what is now Jefferson Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He served as a justice of the peace for twenty years, was deeply interested in the schools of his day, and was school director. He was identified with the Whig party, and later united with the Democrats. He was a member of the United Pres-byterian Church.
