He was a shoemaker, but followed the trade of stonemason most of his life in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he died, aged seventy-two years. He was three times married, and was the father of eighteen children, eight of whom were still living in 1889.

He was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and came to Allegheny County when eighteen years old, and settled at Buena Vista. He subsequently removed to Boston.
