General Notes: Husband - David Lyle

He was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania; he moved with his parents to Washington County in June, 1784. As early as 1806, attracted by the rich walnut lands of Fairfield County, Ohio, he visited Walnut Township in that county, selected his land and built a cabin, and moved to this new home with his wife and five small children in November, 1812. As assignee of Asa Murphy, he obtained a patent from the U. S. Government for the south half of section No. 10 in said township and county on June 24, 1814. On May 20, 1816, Governor Thomas Worthington (of Ohio) issued a commission to David Lyle, Gent. as Lieut. of the 4th Company of the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, 2nd Brigade and 3rd Division of the Ohio Militia. He was township clerk, trustee and a Justice of the Peace. His land and home being located in almost the center of the township, there were held the elections as were the muster days of the Militia for many years.

OHIO EAGLE
Lancaster, Ohio, April 4, 1822
FATAL ACCIDENT
On Tuesday week last, as David Lyle, Esq. was in the act of shaving with a draw knife a small stick of wood, one end of which was thrust into a crack in the wall of an old building, the other end closely pressed against his body, a piece of timber accidentally fell from the loft of the building on the stick of wood he was shaving, which gave it a sudden jerk downwards and inflicted a wound on the bowels of Mr. Lyle which proved fatal. He lingered about twelve hours in extreme misery when he expired. He was a respectable citizen of Walnut Township, greatly esteemed by all who knew him, and he has left a large family to lament his sudden and untimely end.

He was buried in the old cemetery at the south-east corner of High and Chestnut streets in Lancaster, Ohio. About the year 1900 his remains and grave marker were removed to the Forest Rose Cemetery in Lancaster.
