He was educated in the common schools of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he afterwards engaged in the profession of teaching which he followed for six years, teaching four terms at the same place. Leaving the school room he engaged in agricultural pursuits and came to own three farms of good, well-improved land. He was a democrat and together with his wife belonged to the Lutheran church.
