General Notes: Husband - Archibald J. "Archie" McKean
He was reared in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, attending both its public schools and Allegheny College, at Meadville. But though thoroughly and quite liberally educated, in youth he followed the traditions of his race and his family in the mastery of a trade, which in his case happened to be that of chair-making and painting. He did not follow it long, however, but in 1851, then twenty-five years of age, established a drug business at Mercer, which he conducted, at the corner of East Market and Pitt streets, for a period of fifty-five years. In 1896 he retired with a fine competency, two years afterward was elected president of the First National Bank, which he had assisted in founding in 1864, and with whose directory and management he had been continuously identified. After that year he devoted himself to the development of its affairs, to the care of his property and other interests, and to the duties which naturally fell to him as a public-spirited citizen and a faithful householder. He and his family were leading members of the Methodist church, and during the four decades which covered his voting period he never failed in his support of either the Whig or the Republican parties.
He and his wife had eight children.
