He attended the schools of Wesley, Irwin township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and for several years worked on a farm. He was a resident of Renfrew, Butler County, beginning in 1883, and had various business interests there, being for a number of years a well known building contractor. He served in the capacity of postmaster beginning in 1923. He was a Republican and held several township offices. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
