He was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1849 he went to California, crossing the country in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. Three years later, he returned to his home at Cambridge, Ohio, by way of the Pacific, the Isthmus of Panama (on pack mule), the Gulf of Mexico, New Orleans, the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. About 1860 the family moved to near Washington Court House, Ohio, and in 1869 to Indiana, living most of their remaining years in Marion County.
