General Notes: Husband - Milton R. Waugaman
He was born near Poke Run church in Washington township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, seven miles southwest of the town of Vandergrift, near Beaver Run church. He gained his education in the local public schools. Upon completing his studies there, he went for a time to Saltsburg, where he learned the operation of the telegraph, and as a boy of nineteen went to work for the railroad there as an operator. Somewhat later he was given a position as clerk in the freight office at Saltsburg, where he remained for a considerable period. He laid aside sufficient funds from his earnings to enable him to take a course at Eastman's Business College at Poughkeepsie, New York. Here he followed commercial studies and graduated. It had been his intention to return at once to his railroad work, but in 1898 the Spanish-American War broke out, and Mr. Waugaman at once enlisted in Company D, Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard. He was shortly afterwards transferred to the Signal Corps at Chicamaugua, in the Ninth Volunteer Signal Company. This body was shortly afterwards sent to Porto Rico, and he was still in that company at the time of the signing of the protocol. Upon the close of hostilities, Mr. Waugaman was honorably discharged from the service, returned at once to Pennsylvania, and resumed his studies at Saltsburg. In the year 1901 he was transferred to the station at Butler, where he was given the position of chief clerk, and was made extra agent on the division in May, 1902. He spent some considerable time in every office on the division in this capacity and this continued for a period of some eight years. He was then made agent at the Apollo Station, his taking of this position occurring on February 7, 1910. Then on December 14, 1914, he was transferred to the station at Vandergrift, which was the most important railroad point in the division, and under him Mr. Waugaman had fifteen assistants.
He was a member of the International Association of Ticket Agents, and spent many of his vacations on the trips organized by this society. He visited many of the most interesting and beautiful spots on the continent, including the Grand Canyon of Colorado, and Banff, Alberta.
