General Notes: Husband - Elias Hackey Silvis

He obtained his education in the common schools of Export, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. On reaching manhood he decided to devote himself to agricultural pursuits, and for some years lived as a renter in Franklin. He then moved to Penn township where he was a renter for four years, and at the end of that time went to Hempfield where he rented a farm. This farm he cultivated for sixteen years, and about 1893 purchased a portion of the adjoining property to which he removed in 1899. Three years after he bought an adjoining piece of land, thus giving himself a farm of sixty-two acres. In 1904 he built a substantial farm residence with modern improvements, and had one of the most attractive homes in the township. Mr. Silvis frequently served on the election board, but always steadily refused to be a candidate for office. He and his sons were all staunch Democrats, and the whole family were members of the First Reformed church, of Greensburg.
