He was born in Chartiers township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, being educated in the subscription schools of the home district. After marriage he and his wife resided in Chartiers township until 1848; then bought a partially improved farm of 106 acres in Cecil township. He voted with the Democratic party, and in religion both were members of the Presbyterian Church at Canonsburg, of which he was for many years a ruling elder.
