General Notes: Husband - Joseph Sloan
He is among the oldest residents of the Venango Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, [1883]. He was a pioneer on the farm he now occupies, and settled on it in 1834. He once counted eleven deer in his field without moving from the doorway of his cabin. He was often obliged to chase away bears to prevent them from destroying his hogs. [HBC 1883, 451]
He attended such schools as the locality afforded, and grew to manhood at the home farm. Later he learned the hatter's trade, following the same at Brownsville, Pennsylvania. He then returned to Venango township and bought a farm which he managed until 1840, also working at his trade. In the latter year he abandoned his trade entirely, and until his death devoted himself to agriculture. He was one of the substantial men of the township, and held many town offices. He was a Whig in politics, then affiliated with the Know-Nothing party, later becoming a Republican. He filled the offices of assessor, collector of taxes and supervisor alternately for many years. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church.
Confusion in the lists of his children. In HBC 1883, 451: Mary is listed twice; states that Mary and Martha were twins. Instead of Martha, could "Marilda" be meant?
