General Notes: Husband - Rev. Philip Henry Parret
He was educated in a private school in his native state, and worked on his father's farm until he was twenty years old, when he was compelled to enter the Confederate service. Having reached military age he was enrolled in the Virginia State Militia, and in 1862 he was sent to the front, his company being placed in Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson's command. He was in a number of the severest battles of the Civil war, but his sympathies were not with the cause of the Confederacy and his religious convictions in regard to war were those of his family, who were Mennonites. He served two years in the Army of Northern Virginia, but in April, 1864, he had an opportunity to make his escape. He came to Washington County, Maryland, where he had friends, in May, 1864, and in August of the same year he settled in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, with whose interests and people he was thereafter identified. After coming to Franklin County he took an active part in church work and he was ordained a minister by Bishop Eshleman, of Washington County, Maryland, May 18, 1872. For more than thirty years he served the Chambersburg Mennonite congregation, one of the oldest in the county. The first church edifice, on the turnpike north of the borough, was built in 1804. Mr. Parret also ministered for the Row and Marion and Williamson congregations. He owned a small but valuable farm of 116 acres in Greene township, near the Chambersburg borough limits.
