He was educated in the public schools and became a farmer. In 1895 he bought a farm in Letterkenny township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but he prefered to live on the old Weist homestead in Hamilton township on which he was born, as it is in the limestone belt near the mountains. In politics he was a Republican, and he was an elder in the Reformed Church.
