He was a printer by trade and was employed by the General Manifold & Printing Company of Franklin, Pennsylvania; a musician by profession, he was one of the first young men of Franklin to enlist in the service as a musician, and was stationed at Cape May, New Jersey, for eighteen months during the war, with one of the largest naval bands along the coast.
