He acquired his education in the common schools and Waynesburg College. He remained on the farm with his parents until twenty-one years of age, then engaged in teaching for a period of ten years. In 1874 he began the study of law with Messrs. Donley and Inghram, and was admitted to the bar in October, 1876. He commenced the practice of his chosen profession at Waynesburg in 1877, and since 1878 was in partnership with J. W. Ray, Esq. In politics he was a Republican.
