General Notes: Husband - William J. Potts
He attended the public schools until the age of thirteen years, when he entered the drug store of William Hugus, in his native town, and thereafter devoted his life to the drug business. He remained in the employ of Mr. Hugus for three years, and then spent a year in earnest study in the Delmont Academy. In 1870-71 he continued his studies at the College of Pharmacy in Philadelphia. He then, as prescription clerk, entered the drug store of William Brown, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and held this position three years. He started in business for himself, April 1, 1875, opening a small drug store in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, under his own name, and this small beginning prospered under his management, until he occupied the entire lower floor of a handsome two-story brick block, which he built in 1888 for his business purposes. Mr. Potts was also a stockholder and director of the First National Bank of Ligonier; and was interested in other of the town enterprises. He was an active member of the Ligonier Rod and Gun Club, and of the Ligonier Driving Association. He was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran church of Ligonier, which congregation he served as deacon. His political faith was that of the Republican party, and he served the borough three terms as chief burgess, as well as one year (1905) as mercantile appraiser of Westmoreland County. His residence was a handsome, three-story brick dwelling, at the corner of Main and Fairfield streets, which he built in 1895.
