General Notes: Husband - John Lawrence
Those of the name Lawrence who became prominent in Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania are supposed to have sprung from brothers who came to America from England at an early day. A son of one of these settled in Adams County, Pennsylvania, about the year 1770, where he afterward died, leaving a family of ten children.
About the year 1788 his widow, with this large family, came over the mountains when there was only a pathway, the mother carrying the youngest son, Joseph (then three years old), on her knee on horseback. They settled on a small farm on the headwaters of Pigeon creek, eight miles east of Washington, Pennsylvania, in a cabin, and there the family - seven daughters and three sons - grew up. In time the daughters all married in Washington County, and raised families.
Of English birth, he emigrated to America at an early day, and settled near Hunterstown, Adams County, Pennsylvania. There he married and he and his wife had ten children. He died about 1789, and three years afterward his widow removed with her family to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and settled on a farm lying upon the headwaters of Pigeon creek. [HWC 1882, 597]
