He lived in County Down, Ireland, and came to America in 1823, taking up a two hundred acre tract in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was aided by his sons, some of whom were grown up and old enough to help clear away the forest, and to bring under cultivation the farm, which was located on the old "Scrub Grass" Road, twelve miles from Mercer.
He lived to be over ninety years of age.

He was the father of four sons and four daughters. [BOBLC, 216] But GPHWP gives the names of five sons, adding James.
