General Notes: Husband - George Washington Smail
Civil War: He enlisted in the 140th Pennsylvania Volunteers on 15 August 1862 and fought in the battles at Chancellorsville, Spottslvania, Gettysburg, and Appomattox. At Cold Harbor, where he was shot on 2 June 1864, he performed surgery on his wounded hand with his pocket knife. According to his great-grandson, Eldon Wright, relatives did not expect him to survive the war, and so when he appeared at the home place after his discharge on 11 May 1865, both his mother and sister, Martha, fainted.
After the Civil War he went to Iowa, and six years later, as part of a wagon train, he moved westward. When the wagons camped for the night along the Solomon River in Ottawa County, Kansas, he and his in-laws, decided not to go on. They homesteaded ten miles southeast of Glasco. George later became a rural mail carrier.
When descendents visited the area in 1980, some of the older inhabitants still remembered George and his saying, "Smail carries the mail."
