He was educated in the common schools. He was reared near Smith Grove, on the farm which his father owned. After his marriage, he cultivated his father's farm a few years; afterwards he removed to Selinsgrove, where he followed the butcher trade. He then moved to Perry County, in 1852, where he continued in the same business.
