He attended the public and high schools of his native borough. In 1868 he went to Des Moines, Iowa, where he was engaged for three years in the stock business with B. W. Shepperd. In 1871 he returned to Westmoreland County, worked at the carpenters' trade until 1875, when he went to Millville, Sewickley township, and was there successfully engaged in the mercantile business until 1878. In that year he returned to Stonersville and was extensively engaged in carpentering and contracting up to 1886. In 1886 he commenced merchandising at Stoners, in which he continued alone till February, 1889, when he took H. S. Landis in as full partner.
