General Notes: Husband - James Simpson

He spent his entire life on the Simpson homestead farm in Cross Creek Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The house in which his children were born was built of stone, to which, as the family grew, a frame addition was made. Some years before his death, he erected a large frame house which became the home of the Simpson family, and the old stone house was abandoned and became a ruin.
Besides being an excellent farmer, Mr. Simpson had a deep interest in the affairs of his community and country, and also in matters of family and local history. His formal education was that which he secured in the district school which was located near his home, but he was a well-read man, and was, without a doubt, the best informed person of his time on matters relating to the history of north-western Washington County and especially of the Cross Creek region in which he lived. He possessed an excellent library of
books on local and national history. Leafing through the books which he left, one would find copious notes giving information invaluable to later generations. He was known during his life time as the antiquarian of the Lyle family and the special depository of family traditions. In his home were many relics of the Lyle family of earlier times. At the first Lyle reunion in 1884, he was able to give to the relatives assembled very instructive explanations of the uses made of these articles of the pioneer Lyles.
During his later years, Mr. Simpson was the the chief instigator of a movement to restore the old graveyard located at the Cross Creek church, and he directed the compilation of the history of that ancient burial ground which was first published in book form in 1894. This book, revised and again published in 1942, is a most reliable source of information on the early and subsequent history of the whole Cross Creek community.
