General Notes: Husband - Andrew Jackson Newill
He was born on the old Newill farm, in Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and continued to reside there uninterruptedly during his childhood and early youth. During the winter months he attended the local public schools and in the summer worked at the tasks of the farm that were fitted to his strength. At the age of twenty he became tipple boss at Mammoth for the Frick Coal Company there and continued in this capacity for a period of some fourteen years. During most of this time he had in the neighborhood of one hundred and forty men working under his direction, whose time it was his duty to keep, and he remained thus employed until the year 1888. He had in the meantime, however, exercised the greatest care and economy and lived a most frugal life, being thus able to save up a portion of his wages, with the intention of making himself eventually independent. In the year above mentioned he found and purchased a farm which consisted of fifty-two acres and previously belonged to Joshua G. Overly; it was in the vicinity of Kecksburg. On a large portion of this property Mr. Newill raised general crops, but he also gave his attention to the growing of fruit as a specialty, and devoted five or six acres to large and small fruits of various kinds. The product of his orchards he disposed of in the immediate vicinity where there were large markets for these commodities. On his farm he erected a new house and remodeled the old barn.
He was particularly fond of all kinds of outdoor sports and pastimes and devoted his vacations to hunting and forest life generally.
