He attended the common schools of his neighborhood, and al­ways resided on the family home farm, at first conducting general farming, operat­ing one hundred and sixty acres, but in his later years he devoted his attention to gardening, this occupation being less laborious. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church, in which faith he was reared, and was a Repub­lican in politics. He was the choice of his fellow townsmen on several occasions for public office.
