General Notes: Husband - Thomas Conrad Porter

He graduated at Lafayette College in 1840, and after passing through the full course of Princeton Theological Seminary, was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, May, 1844. After serving churches in Georgia, and in Reading, Pennsylvania, he was appointed in 1849, Professor of Natural Sciences in Marshall College, Mercersburg, and after removal and consolidation with Franklin College at Lancaster, he was elected to the same chair, which he resigned in 1866 to accept the chair in Lafayette College, which he then filled for over a quarter of a century. In 1865 he received the degree of D.D. from Rutgers College, and the degree of LL.D. from Franklin-Marshall College in 1880. Beyond official duties Dr. Porter delivered a great many sermons, lectures and addresses, did much scientific work, especially in Botany, contributed to the Reviews, made many translations, being familiar with several modern languages, and published several volumes. He was a thorough theologian and had the art of wise exposition, with a charming voice he was persuasive and demonstrative in delivery, and always held attention.
