He chiefly followed farming until 1882, when he formed a partnership with Pressley McCreary. They purchased grain, paying market quotations for barley, etc., and also did a large trade in middlings, phosphates and hard and soft coal. The firm name was McCreary & Sturgeon. They did a general forwarding and commission business; had superior business connections and facilities for shipping.
