He was a prominent Quaker, who was brought to Pennsylvania by William Penn to preach the Friends' Gospel to Indians and Quakers.

One of his sons owned a part of Harper's Ferry. One of his grandsons was Gideon John, sheriff of Fayette County, about 1832.
