He received his education in the district school, and at an early age gave his attention to the study of architecture. For fifteen years he was engaged in general contracting. He later did a conveyancing and private banking business, and beginning in 1902 he filled the office of justice of the peace.
H was both a Mason and an Odd Fellow, being a member of the Masonic Lodge at Girard, the chapter, commandery and Shrine at Erie, and consistory at Pittsburgh.
